Auxiliary Coach Policy
Purpose:
This policy and the procedures included within establish regulations regarding the authorization and staffing of unpaid auxiliary coaching positions.
Definitions:
School Support Organization – any organization recognized by an individual school and the Board as representative of that school’s students, staff, parents, and/or supporters
School Administrator – the Principal
Auxiliary Coach – any individual approved by the board of education who assists with the direct instruction and/or supervision of students in connection with a school/board approved school support organization in a volunteer/unpaid capacity. Auxiliary coaches will be certified properly through steps required by the BOE and WVSSAC.
Process:
Auxiliary coaching positions in a particular sport will be determined by consideration of factors including number of student participants, number of teams, instructional need, etc. The Principal, at the request of the coach, will be required to provide to the Superintendent in writing the need for any Auxiliary Coaches, with justification of the request.
If the superintendent is in agreement with the written request of the school Principal, the Superintendent will request an Auxiliary Coach position be authorized by the Wirt County Board of Education. After authorization, the auxiliary coach must be recommended by the head coach, Athletic Director, principal, and superintendent for approval by the Board.
Auxiliary coaches are not to be used in a way that disrupts or displaces the duties and responsibilities of the head coach or assistant coaching positions. Their role as an “auxiliary” coach must be clearly defined in the principal’s request for, and justification of the needed position. Auxiliary coaches are to be utilized for a specific and finite period of time within the sports’ season that meets the needs described in the initial request, and not simply be an extra coach for the entire season.
Auxiliary Coaches must adhere to the following standards set forth by the Wirt County Board of Education:
a. Auxiliary Coaches will only be approved for the specified period of time period within the season.
b. The Auxiliary Coach must be recommended by the head coach, athletic director, principal, and superintendent for approval by the board.
c. The auxiliary coach must follow all guidelines to be employed as a coach by the WVSSAC and/or WVDE.

b. First Aid/CPR training
c. WVSSAC coaching course, if not a certified professional teacher
d. WVDE Form 39 completed and on file
