🌱🌚 Shout out to our Intro to STEM class who competed this semester in the plant the moon challenge (https://plantthemoon.com/). The team, The Wirt Astro Tigers, won the state level competition for evaluation of results! This activity required students to participate in an eight week project that focused on growing plants in lunar regolith. Students had to perform background research, create and implement an experimental design, collect data on plant growth and environmental factors, and then analyze the results.

🎉CIS State Spotlight🎉 County Contact/Principal/Site Coordinator Collaboration Henry Ford once said, "If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself," and that is exactly what is happening at Wirt County High School in Elizabeth, West Virginia. This is the county's first year for Communities In Schools, and everyone has jumped in with both feet. Wirt County High School is reaping the benefits of having a small school where the staff is invested and works closely together. CIS Coordinator Amanda Moore, Principal Elizabeth Smith, and CIS County Contact Jeff Smith have spent this school year focusing on integrating PBIS Tier II services for students who could benefit from that extra support and also on improving school-wide attendance. The implementation of the Tier II services has included assessing areas of need, determining the appropriate services, creating a referral process, accurately identifying students, and evaluating the effectiveness of these programs. The Tier II Team created Meeks Monday, named after the staff member Kelli Meeks, who is running the group. Meeks Monday provides bi-weekly groups focusing on social and emotional support one week and the opposite week focusing on academic improvement. Throughout the year, the PBIS student support team has hosted activities at Wirt County High School including fall fest, winter fest, and multiple other attendance and behavior-earned rewards. These activities have provided additional opportunities for parental involvement at the high school. Thanks to the experienced leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the coordination of Mrs. Moore, the CIS program is moving forward with great success within the school and also with the students.
